Air layering is a method of propagating new trees and shrubs from stems still attached to the parent plant. The stem is wrapped with a damp medium to encourage roots to form.
Air-layering should always be done during the spring when the tree has started growing after its winter rest.
This technique is used to propagate fruit-bearing and flowering plants such as apple, fig, maple, cherry, orange, lemon and many other trees to make smaller clones of the parent.
Trees produced in this way are genetically identical to the mother-plant which will bear fruits sooner and the fruits will taste the same.
